If you’re a parent trying to protect your child from potentially harmfully things online, this is for you. Today I’ll be showing you how to set up parental controls on Roblox to keep your child safe online. This includes managing who your child can communcate with, and what age-appropriate games they can play. I’ll take you step-by-step through all the different settings you may want to change.
Step 1 – Open Settings
The first thing we’re going to do is open settings. That can be done by clicking the settings icon in the top right corner of the Roblox homepage. This will open the settings page. Alternatively you can go the URL https://www.roblox.com/my/account#!/info. Make sure you’re logged into the correct account.
Step 2 – Add Your Email
To carry on with this guide, you must first add your email to your child’s account, to do that, click on “Add Parent’s Email”. Once you’ve clicked that, input your (parent’s) email address then verify it. Once you’ve verified, refresh the page, you should see “✔ Verified” next to your email.
After you’re verified, it should look like this:
Step 3 –Â Open Parental Controls
Now you’ve verified your email, click the Parental Controls button in the left menu, as shown below.
Step 4 – Manage Settings
Now you’re in the parental controls settings, you should be able to see 4 settings: Parent PIN, Allowed Experiences, Monthly Spend Restrictions, and Spend Notifications.
Parent PIN (Required to Continue)
The Parent PIN option allows you to set a pin that needs to be inputted for changes to settings to be made. For example, your child wouldn’t be able to change communication settings without inputting this pin. The pin is a 4 digit numerical pin that can be set to whatever number you like. To create a Parent PIN, toggle the “Parent PIN” option on & choose a pin. Click add when you’re ready to activate the pin, make sure you remember this number. You will need to input the account’s password to verify.
Allowed Experiences
Allowed Experiences is the limit for the highest rated games the account can join. For example, if set to “9+”, your child will only be able to play games that are rated “9+” or below, if set to “13+” your child will be able to play any game on the platform, and if set to “All Ages” your child will only be able to play games that are suitable for everyone. Choose which restriction you would like your child to have. You may have to input your pin when setting this.
You can also choose whose private servers your child can join via a link with the dropdown below.
Monthly Spend Restrictions
Monthly Spend Restrictions allows you to set limits on how much your child can spend on Robux per calendar month (resets on 1st of each month). To set this up, turn the setting on. A spending limit will then appear below, to set a spending limit, click update, input an amount & click save.
Spend Notifications
Spend Notifications is a feature that sends notifications to the verified parent email address. Once enabled, you can click on the dropdown menu to choose to either recieve Default Notifications, or All Notifications. If you want to recieve the most information about your child’s spending choose All Notifications. If you want to recieve less, choose Default Notifications.
Step 5 – Communication Limits
Our next step is to set up limits that control who your child can communicate with on the site. The first thing you need to do is select privacy on the left menu.
Now we can change the account’s privacy settings.
Account Restrictions
Account Restrictions disallows anything inappropriate for all users, this means that your child can only join games suitable for all users & cannot communicate with anyone on the platform, not even their friends. If you wish to enable this, you will not be able to control any communication settings.
Communcation
Communication settings controls who your child can communicate with on the platform. First of all, there are 3 overall settings for communication, Default, Custom & Off. We’re going to leave it as custom so we can tweak every setting.
Now you have communication settings set to custom, you can tweak who your child can communicate with and where.
Who can message me?
This setting allows you to choose who can send messages to your child’s message inbox, if the account is under 13, you will only have “Friends” or “No one”, if the account is over 13, there will be other options too. Choose whichever you feel is the correct choice.
Who can chat with me in-app?
This setting allows you to choose who can message your child in the “Chat” section of the Roblox app/website. This can only be set to “Friends” or “No one” no matter the user’s age. Again, choose whichever you feel is the correct choice.
Who can chat with me?
This setting allows you to choose who can message your child whilst they are in an experience (game). This can only be set to “Everyone” or “No one”. Everyone means your child can communicate with anyone in that server. If your child is under 13, Roblox has a special chat filter to filter out any unsafe language, this is called “Safe Chat”.
Other Settings
Other settings allows you to customize settings that don’t fall into any other category, for example who can invite your child to a private server (a game instance where only invited users can join).
Who can make me a member of their private server?
This controls who can invite your child to join their private game instance. This is a server that only invited users and the owner can join, these can cost money to create but don’t cost money to be invited to. If your child is under 13, the only people who can invite them to private servers are friends.
Who can join me in experiences?
This setting allows you to choose who can join your child’s game if your child is in a publicly accessible server or a private server that the other user is also a member of. If your child is under the age of 13, there are only three settings. “Friends and users I follow” allows your child’s friends & the accounts they are following to join them in game. “Friends” only allows your child’s friends to join them in-game. “No one” allows nobody to join your child in game. These settings will not stop random users joining your child if they are in a publicly accessible server, it will only stop users specifically joining your child’s game rather than another.
Who can see my inventory?
This controls who can see the items in your child’s inventory. The items in your child’s inventory varies from earned badges to owned gamepasses to owned clothing. There are many options to choose from, they’re all self-explanitory. Choose whichever you feel is most appropriate.
Done!
You have now set up most, if not all, of the parental and privacy controls currently avaliable on Roblox. Your child should now be safe on the platform.
