Roblox is an online platform where users can create games (experiences) for others users to play on the platform. This creates a community sense as the players are the ones actually making the games. Roblox attracts millions of unique users per month, most of which being young people. But is Roblox a safe place for so many young people, well, in this article we’ll be looking at how old you need to be to play Roblox.

Is There an Official Roblox Age Restriction?

Many platforms online have a minimum age requirement for signing up, such as Google, which has a requirement that a user is at least 13 years old. However, Roblox is unique in the fact that there is no age limit when signing up, you can quite literally set your birth date to today whilst creating an account. However, Roblox limits users that are under the age of 13 with certain restrictions which will be explained further in this article.

What Can’t Roblox Players Under 13 Do?

There are many restrictions imposed on users under the age of 13 on Roblox to make sure they stay safe on the platform. These include communication restrictions and the ability for parental controls to be set up on the account. For example, users under the age of 13 cannot send or receive direct messages from any user on the platform, only their friends, whilst users over the age of 13 can open their direct messages to anyone on the platform. There are also many parental controls on Roblox, these can be used to limit what games a user can play, who they can communicate with and how much money they can spend on Roblox. Users under the age of 13 have an array of settings that cannot be changed no matter what. For example, a user under the age of thirteen cannot change their birthday so they are over 13. That means, if you inputted your age incorrectly, you can’t change it. Another setting that cannot be changed is the use of “Safe Chat”. Safe chat is Roblox’s chat filter for users under the age of 13, all users have a chat filter, but Safe Chat is far more strict.

Can You Change Your Birth Date to Be Over 13 on Roblox?

If your birth date is set to under the age of 13 on Roblox, unfortunately, there is no way to change it yourself. However, you can contact support and request them to change it for you, but there is no guarantee they will.

Is Roblox Actually Safe For Children?

This is a common question, many are unsure of how safe the Roblox platform really is. Roblox has many measures in place to keep all users on the platform safe. For example, when an image is uploaded to Roblox, it is moderated under very strict rules. Another example is the chat filters, when users are talking in-experience, all of their messages pass through a chat filter to verify that they are safe messages, moderated messages will appear as hash symbols rather than the original message. However, even despite the strict moderation on the platform, there is still the odd occurance of something getting past the Roblox moderation systems. You may have seen news reports where such things are discussed. But, once reported, most of these things will be immediately taken down by the Roblox moderators and action will be taken against the culprit.

Generally, Roblox should be safe for your child to play. With the newly added features to parental controls you can now even control what experiences your child can play, based on their age ratings. This means you can stop your child playing violent games or games that include reference to gambling, etc.
